You must have sufficient proficiency in the English language if you want to study abroad in Canada. A minimum IELTS score of 6.5 is usually considered ideal for getting admission into a Canadian university. However, TOEFL and PTE Academic may also be considered. Courses usually commence 2 times a year- in Fall (September) and Winter (January), subject to the course availability. Few universities also offer additional Summer programs (commencing in April-May).
Moving on to visa requirements, if you’re confirmed with an enrolment from your desired institute, you can then apply for a Study Permit with documents including proof of sufficient funds, character, and fitness, alongside a Visitor’s Visa.
The good news is, Canadian universities charge much lower tuition fees, compared to other high-ranked universities across the world, with an average of around Canadian $21-22,000. While courses related to arts and humanities may cost you on the lower side, engineering and science related ones may cost you on the higher scale. MBA programs usually cost the highest, often going upto as high as Canadian $40,000. The cost of living usually ranges between Canadian $14-16,000 annually; you’ll also have to cover mandatory health insurance costs of about Canadian $8-900 annually (depending on province). Approximately Canadian $250 will also be charged in order to process your Study Permit and Visitor’s visa. You may even avail scholarships, offered by the Home or Destination State, independent funding agencies, or the concerned university.
If your Study Permit allows you to work on-campus or for an employer associated with your university, you’ll be able to work throughout the tenure of your course- not before or after. However, if your course demands you to work as an intern, you’re going to require an additional work permit. Once you’re done with all your plans to study abroad in Canada, you might be eligible for a Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP), Open Work Permit, or an Employer-Specific Work Permit. Your education and work experience may eventually lead you to avail a Permanent Residency (PR) status in Canada.
