Necessary Information about a Study Permit to Study in Canada

The study permit is a document that allows foreign nationals to study in Canada at DLIs (designated learning institutions). To study in Canada, the majority of foreign nationals require a study permit. Before you apply, double-check that you have all of the necessary documents. You should apply before you travel to Canada.

A study permit is not the same as a visa. It doesn't let you enter Canada. A visitor visa or an electronic travel authorization (eTA) may also be required. If your study permit is approved, the country will send you one along with your study permit.

With a Study Permit, How Long May you Stay in Canada?

A study permit normally lasts for the duration of your program plus an additional 90 days. You have 90 days to prepare to depart Canada or to request a stay extension.

If You’re Taking Prerequisite Courses

If your school requires you to take courses before being accepted into the main program (conditional acceptance), your study permit will be valid for the duration of those courses plus one additional year. You must apply to extend your stay as a student after being accepted into the main program.

If You’ll Finish your Studies after your Study Permit Expires

If you don’t complete your courses before the date on your permit, you must apply to extend your stay as a student. If you don’t, you’ll have to stop studying and leave Canada.

If you Complete your Studies Before your Study Permit Expires

If you complete your studies early, your permit will stop being valid 90 days after you complete your studies, regardless of the date indicated on the study permit. You've finished your studies when your school first notifies you by completion letter, transcript, degree, or diploma. 

You must show proof of the date your school notified you or the date your degree, diploma, or certificate was received. If you don't have proof, the authority will use the document's earliest issuance date. This date may be confirmed with your school.

Is it Possible for you to Return Home While Studying? 

Yes. If you leave Canada while pursuing your studies, you may be required to show proof of enrollment in your school when you return to Canada. And When you return to Canada, your visitor visa or electronic travel authorization (eTA) must still be valid.
